Kelly's Wayke
The Story Behind The Music
wayke [weyk]
An ancient spelling of the word “wake”:
1, (verb) to become roused from a tranquil or inactive state; awaken; waken.
2. (noun) a less formal social gathering, held after a funeral to celebrate the life of the deceased.
It was at an Irish wake where this band was born. It was inevitable that instruments would be played and songs would be sung when the Kelly and Murphy families got together to celebrate the life of beloved brother and friend Mick Murphy. When the venue manager entered the function room, all assumed that their singing was too loud. Instead, the publican asked “Would you mind playing in the front bar? We’ve all been enjoying your music for hours!”. Fast forward many years and Kelly’s Wayke are now a crowd favourite at festivals and events across the country.
Recognised for their powerful live performances and strong festival presence, they are fronted by head banging legend Damien Kelly of “Almost Human” fame who brings the same raw energy to the stage (minus the lycra and tights). Joined by some of South Australia’s finest musicians delivering a live show that lingers in the hearts of audiences well beyond the encore.
Boasting a Tamworth Golden Fiddle Award and a catalogue of three studio albums, the band has firmly established itself on the Australian folk scene. First time audiences quickly become life long fans. If you haven’t experienced Kelly’s Wayke yet, don’t miss the chance – and if you have, chances are you’ll be front and centre at the next show.
